The Power Of The Tongue
By James L. Thornton

Mark 14. 70.  And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, surely thou art one of them; for thou art a Galilean, and thy speech agreeth thereto.

Matthew 26:73b. ..; For thy speech betrayeth thee.

Isn't it strange how that being raised, or associated with various sections or localities within a country affects the speech of each individual?

In the U.S.A. You can tell a person from the deep south from a northerner by the way he draws out each syllable.

Also Certain Words, Or Phrases, Designate The Area One Is From.
Southerners say, "You'all come."
Northerners say, "Youse guys come."
You can tell a person from Brooklyn just by listening to him talk,
The same thing is true whether we are from Australia, Great Britain,
Or any country for that matter.

The tone and manner in which Peter answered betrayed him.
He was from the north (Galilee) and those who heard him could tell by his speech.

It is A Difficult Thing To Disguise Our Speech,
God has made it so.
But more than environment,
More than being a southerner,
More than being a northerner,
More than being from, Brooklyn or Chinatown,
The thing that affects our speech the most,
Is how close we walk with Jesus.

Our communications and interactions with Jesus Christ are reflected by our conversations,
More than the way we dress,
More than the way we fix our hair,
More that the airs we put on.

Your Tongue Will Betray You.
"Talk is cheap."
"Words, words, nothing but words."
"He's just a talker."

This is how people depreciate the importance of speech.

But there are few things more potent for good or ill than words.

Speech is the facility that differentiates man from beast.

It is the sign of personality.

Thoughts Are Manifest In Speech.
As lightening precedes thunder,
So thoughts precedes speech.

Matthew 12:34. O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
35. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
36. But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.  (KJV)

James 3:5. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
6. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. (KJV)

The Power Of The Tongue
It can inflame a mob to lynch.
It can also inspire a nation to heroic action. (W. Churchill, W.W. 2)
It can console the bereaved,
Words of comfort can rescue a soul from despair.

Hot Words Start Quarrels,
Destroy friendships,
Breaks up homes,
Instigate wars.

Old Proverb,
"Sticks and stones may break my bones,
But words can never hurt me."

I Disagree,
The wounds in the body made by stones may heal,
But the hurt in the heart made by an insult may endure for a lifetime.

Many Have Fallen By The Sword,
But not as many as have fallen by the tongue.
Evil words divide families, friends, church congregations.

Ephesians 4:29. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. (KJV)

Proverbs 6:16. These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
17. A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
18. An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
19. A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. (KJV)

We Murder And Kill Influence With Words.
The tongue reveals what's in the heart.

If we have been perpetrators of fact or fiction let us take note that God will call us into judgment.

Jesus Says,
Matthew 12:36.  "But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give thereof in the day of judgment.

The Church Will Not Fall Before It's Enemies,
But many are torn by strife within.

Remember Rome Was Not Destroyed By Invading Armies,
But it slowly decayed within until it's strength was gone.

Our Character Will Be Revealed By The Words We Speak,

Just as Simon Peter's was in the High Priest's palace.

We hope you enjoyed this study on “The Power Of The Tongue”.
