MOSES AND HOBAB

 By James L. Thornton

The following Is a study of an incident In which Moses’ Father In Law visited with Him during the time He was leading the Children of Israel towards the Land of Canaan. Moses tried to persuade Raguel, His Father In Law, to go with them and partake of the blessings The Lord had promised Them.

Numbers 10:30. " And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses' father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which the LORD said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel.
31. And he said unto him, I will not go; but I will depart to mine own land and to my kindred."

Within three months after leaving Egypt The Children Of Israel reached Mt. Siania, in the Desert of Arabia.
They remained there for nine months. There they kept the first Anniversary Passover.

It was during this time they were solidified into the First Religious Unity, called the church in the Wilderness. (Acts 7:38)

It Was Here That God Gave Them His Laws And Commandments. God Surely Must Have Deemed This A Very Important Period In The History Of Mankind. In A Book That Does Not Waste Words... Most Bibles Have Over 1000 Pages. A Book That Many Times Passes Off A Century In A Single Sentence, And A Man's Lifetime In A Few Words. Yet Prolongs And Expands On A Moment God Wants Remembered.

Yet God Allowed, Yea Wanted, More Written About This Nine Months Period Than Any Like Period In The Entire Bible. No Other Event... No Other Happening...Is There As Much Said About It As There Is About The Encampment At Sanai.

60 Chapters...Beginning At The 19th Chapter Of Exodus...
The Entire Book Of Leviticus...
And The First 10 Chapters Of Numbers.

It Was Here That The Construction Of The Ark Of The Covenant Took Place. The Tabernacle And All Of Its Furnishings Was Built... (Altar, Table Of Shewbread, Candlestick)   Exodus 35:10-19

It Was Here That The Priesthood Was Ordained...
And Aaron Lite The Lamps...
The Cloud Covered The Tabernacle..
.And They Kept The First Anniversary Passover.

Sometime During This Period, (The Encampment) Hobab, A Relative Of Moses By Marriage, Came Into The Camp On A Visit. He Was A Midianite By Race. A Member Of A Wandering Tribe Of People.

He Knew Every Foot Of Ground In That Area.
He Knew Where The Springs Were...
He Knew Where The Grass Grew...
He Knew Where The Camping Places Were...
He Knew Where The Short Cuts Were Through The Wilderness...
He Knew The Safest Routes To Take.

All Of This Was Very Important For Their Passage Through This Barren Land On Their Way To Caanan.

Moses Urges Hobab To Go With Them...

"To Be To Us Instead Of Eyes."

But Hobab Was A Free, Wild Wanderer... He Did Not Care To Leave The Tents Of His People To Join A Group Of Fugitives Wandering In The Wilderness.

He Flatly Refuses.

Moses Presses Him With Promises Of Sharing In All Of Their Prosperity...

God Does Not Think It Worth While To Tell Whether Moses' Attempt To Secure Help From A Wilderness Guide Failed, Or Succeeded. (Judges 1:16)

But One Thing The Writer Plainly Tells Us,

"The Ark Of The Covenant Of The Lord Went Before Them... To Search Out A Resting Place For Them."

And How, "The Cloud Was Upon Them When They Went Out Of Camp."

God Would Teach Us That It Mattered Little Whether Israel Had Hobab Or Not, They Had The Cloud.

Perhaps It Was A Wavering Of Faith In Moses To Be So Anxious To Secure A Human Guide, When He Had A Divine Leader... (The Ark And The Cloud)

I Shall Be Forever Grateful For The Men And Women Who Have Been My Guides And Instructors, Leading Me To The Way Everlasting.

Sunday School Teachers...

Pastors And Preachers...

Saints Pointing The Way By Living Example.

The Greatest of These Pointed Out The Cloud And The Fire To Me.

Saying,

"Don’t Follow Me, But Follow The Cloud..."

"I'm Not The Light, But Come To Bear Witness Of The Light."

God's Guidance Does Not Make Man's Guidance Unnecessary.

A Very Large Part Of God's Guidance Is Ministered To Us Through Men And Women.

To Live Without Human Help And Guidance, Is To be Either A Savage Or An Angel.

But Always The Human Guide Should Turn Us Away From Himself To God.

We are Ever Apt To Feel That We Cannot Do Without The Human Leader As Moses Himself Did.

We Are All Apt To Pin Our Faith On Some Trusted Guide.

Some Will Follow Some Preacher, Or Teacher, With A Submission Which They Refuse To Give To Jesus Christ.

The Teacher Or Preacher Has Truly Succeeded When You Can Do Without Him, And You Can Draw First-Hand From The Depths Of God.

The True leader Of The Children Of Israel Was Not Moses Or Hobab, But The Divine Presence Of God In The Cloud And In The Fire.

We Have The Same Divine Presence For Guidance To Lead Us.

We Know That Ahead Of Us Lies The Unknown...Many Time We Are Unsure.

For Us All, The Road Is New, Day By Day...Every Day Is A New Experience...

We Have Not Passed This Way Before.

Ahead Lie Mountains, Valleys, Dry Places, And Dangerous Precipices, So We Do Need Guidance.

Moses Sought To Secure This Midianite Guide Because He Was A Native Of The Desert.

He Had Traveled All Over It...His Experience Was His Qualifications.

We Have A Brother, His Name Is Jesus, Who Has Traveled Every Foot Of The Road We Have To Travel.

His Footsteps Have Marked Out Our Path.

He Knows How To Encamp In The Wilderness.

He Knows The Perils Of The Way.

From Experience He Has Learned The Weariness Of The Journey.

He Also Knows Where The Springs Are.

He Knows Where The Grass Grows.

He Knows Where The Camping Places Are.

He Knows Where The Short Cuts Are.

He Knows The Safest Routes.

I Want To Point You To Jesus Christ...His Life Is Our Pattern.

Our Marching Orders Are Brief And Simple...

"Follow Me."

Just Follow Your Leader...Plant Your Feet In His Footprints.

He Was God Manifest In The Flesh.

He Was A Brother To Be Our Guide.

He Was The Captain Of Our Salvation.

We Can Put All Our Confidence In Him.

We Can Put All Our Affections On Him.

All Our Joy And Duty Lies In One Command..."Follow Me."

Ask Him To Be With You "Instead Of Eyes."

Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.(KJV)

John 14:6. Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

 (KJV)

Andrew Was The First To Follow Him...Since That Day There Have Been Millions.

They Have Come From All Walks Of Life, From Every Nation And Race Under Heaven.

Will You Be The Next To Follow Him?

There Is An Old Song We Use To Sing,

"Where He Leads Me I Will Follow,

I'll Go With Him, With Him, All The Way."

Numbers 10:30. And he said unto him, I will not go; but I will depart to mine own land, and to my kindred.
31. And he said, Leave us not, I pray thee; forasmuch as thou knowest how we are to encamp in the wilderness, and thou mayest be to us instead of eyes
32.  And it shall be, if thou go with us, yea, it shall be, that what goodness the LORD shall do unto us, the same will we do unto thee.
33. And they departed from the mount of the LORD three days' journey: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD went before them in the three days' journey, to search out a resting place for them.
34. And the cloud of the LORD was upon them by day, when they went out of the camp. (KJV)
