While Men Slept
By, James L. Thornton
Matthew 13:24. “Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:
25. But WHILE MEN SLEPT, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.”
In this parable Jesus is emphasizing the importance of being watchful lest the enemy of our soul come, while we are not on guard, and sow some seeds that will be detrimental to the Good Seed of the Word of God. We are to ever be alert because the enemy never sleeps and is wanting to catch us asleep. Awesome things happen While Men Sleep.
2,550 years ago the Greeks armed their ships and men and started a war with the city of Troy. The men of Troy had supposedly abducted Helen, the wife of the king of Sparta. For the next 10 years they lay siege against the city of Troy to no avail.
Then they began to withdraw their forces and from all appearances boarded their ships and sailed away. The citizens of Troy began to celebrate and sometime in the night, While Men slept, there was a huge wooden horse appeared at the city gate. The men of Troy, thinking it as a token of their bravery from the army of Sparta, opened the gate and pushed it inside and closed the gate.
Sparta went back to sleep, and While Men Slept, a door was opened in the big wooden horse and men came out of the wooden horse in the darkness and opened the gate of Troy. In the meantime the ships of Sparta had returned and the army was at the gate and came in and conquered the city of Troy. While Men Slept the enemy came and with stealth subjugated a city.
Sometime in that same era Belshazzar was celebrating in the city of Babylon with an all-night party with a thousand of his lords. The city had been under siege for quite some time and it looked like the Medes and Persians were withdrawing when, in fact, they were building a dam to divert the water of the mighty Euphrates River which ran through the City of Babylon until it was only a small stream.
And While Men Slept and feasted the Medes and Persian army swept in through the breach in their defense and conquered the great City of Babylon, slew King Belshazzar and the great Babylonian Empire came to an end.
December 6, 1941, Saturday night, Commander Harold Pullen, commander of United States Naval Forces, gave a dinner at the officers club for the officers under his command. General Wilson, United States Army Commander, was at a night club partying with his officers.
While Men Slept a Japanese Armada of 6 carriers, 2 battleships, 3 cruisers, 9 destroyers, Sailed In The Night. In a few hours the US Arizona and 1,000 men aboard were dead, the US Utah and many more lay at the bottom of the harbor, 2,500 men died thousands wounded, While Men Slept who should have been on guard.
2000 years ago, While Men Slept, Jesus agonized in prayer in the Garden Of Gethsemane. The enemy was approaching in the night, coming to take away their Master to crucify him on an old rugged cross.
Over and over Jesus emphasized the importance of being ever watchful for His return. He knew that the generations which followed would tend to forget about His coming again, and would fill their lives with things which would cause people to be caught not expecting His return.
Luke 21:34. “And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. 35. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.”
You may say “That’s old news, I’ve heard that preached all my life and still he has not returned.” I say it is new news Jesus is coming back and the news thrills me as much as it did when I first heard it. We must never become
