The Throne Of Grace

The Throne Of Grace  Saturday, December 16, 2017

By James L. Thornton

Hebrews 9:6. “Let us come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and grace to help in time of need.

“Throne of grace.” It occurs only here in the Bible, yet it is quoted all over the world. We have heard it from childhood.

It has made such an impression on us that we, many times, don’t realize the meaning.

“Throne,” “Grace,” how do we associate these words? Just remember that God does have a throne.

Psalms 11:4. “The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD'S throne is in heaven:”

Psalms 45:6. “Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever:”

Isaiah 66:1. “The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool:”

Revelation 4:2b. “behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.”

Even though God is everywhere (Om-ni-present).

1 Kings 8:27b “behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee;”

Jeremiah 23:24b. “Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.”

Jesus “lifted up His eyes towards heaven.” This is to remind us that above this sin cursed earth there is a heaven, where God’s throne is established, where God reigns in majesty and glory.

So dazzling is its glory that the Ser-a-phins covered their faces before it. (Isaiah 6:2)

God’s Throne Is A Place Of Equity And Justice:

There, not only our deeds are weighed in the balance, but our thoughts and motives.

Before that throne every mouth is stopped. “Speechless.” (Matthew 22:12) Before that throne the whole world is brought in guilt. “Every knee shall bow.” (Philippians 2:10)

God’s Throne Is The Place Of Dominion And Power:

Earthly governments are weak. They yield to pressure form many quarters. But nothing shall have any effect against the calm Omnipotence of Deity. Pharaoh, king of Egypt, learned that to his sorrow.

No earthly throne could be a Throne of Grace.”

Most earthly thrones, have, and will continue to, become “thrones of iniquity.”

The Throne of Grace is where guilty sinners can find grace and mercy that they need.

Mercy Seat:

The Mercy Seat was a type of the Throne of Grace.”

There the “Shekinah” (that which could be seen) glory appeared. There atonement was made for the sins of Israel. There God met with His people. No ordinary Israelite ever beheld the Mercy Seat.”

But outstretched wings of the Cherubims were ever present to his faith.

Jeremiah 14. tells the story of a terrible drought and famine.

Israel was given over into sin, God said to Jeremiah, “Thou shalt not pray for this people.” (v. 11)

But Jeremiah refused to hold his peace. In his prayer Jeremiah used a word found in the Bible only once, Disgrace.” Grace is used many times but disgrace only once.

Jeremiah 14:21. “Do not abhor us, for thy name's sake, do not disgrace the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us.”

How could the Throne of God be “disgraced?”

If God did not deal with souls that sought Him for mercy and grace. His very Glory would be Disgraced.

John in Revelation speaks of a rainbow circled throne, (Revelation 4:3) The throne bound by the covenant of grace. (Genesis 9:16)

In the New Testament Grace in on the throne.

John 1:14. “We beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

17. The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”

Titus 2:11. “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,”

Titus 3:4. “But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,”

That is the joy of the New Testament.

Grace has come—mercy, kindness, and love followed. Until that day men did not know the meaning of Grace.

Men once offered sacrifices of bulls and goats and turtledoves for mercy—

Now they give themselves.

The work of Grace was revealed at Pentecost.

The Atonement was paid at Calvary,

Signed at that first Resurrection morning.

Delivered at Pentecost.

2 Kings 6. tells the story of a widow woman in grievous trouble.

Her husband had died leaving a large debt, which she could not pay. Her two sons were to be sold as slaves to pay the debt. Then Elisha came and asked her what she had. She only had a small cruse of oil, Elisha commanded her to borrow vessels, many vessels, lots of vessels. He told her to begin pouring the oil from her small cruse. The oil filled all he vessels she had borrowed, and only after all the vessels were filled did the oil stop. She sold the oil and paid off her dept and had money left to live on.

That Is The Way The Grace Of God Works:

It pays of our debts.

Hebrews 9:6. “Let us come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and grace to help in time of need.

We have the right to come and ask for grace and mercy.

The means of grace is open to all.

The 4 chief means of obtaining Grace,

1. A song in our heart.

2. A well-cleansed heart.

3. A well-read Bible.

4. A well kept meeting place with God.
