JESUS CHRIST AND HIS MANY NAMES: (KJV)
By James L. Thornton
What does Christ mean to you? When you consider His Person, His Work, and His Words, are you struck by the depth and complexity, the richness, and incalculable beauty of who He is?
“And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.” Psalm 9:10
In the Bible a person's name was not just his identification but his description. It should not surprise us, then, that the greatest person in the Scriptures--Jesus Christ--would have scores of names, for He Himself is indescribable.
The Old Testament contains a number of names and compound names for God which reveals Him in His character and dealings with mankind, such as,
Jehovah (God of Righteousness and Holiness And Love),
El-Shaddai (The Almighty),
Lord (Supreme Ruler),
Shepherd (Leader and Protector),
Prince Of Peace.
All these, and many more, we must remember, were only descriptive titles, his name remained a secret (Judges 13:18), until the angel Gabriel appeared unto Mary. (Matthew 1:21)
In the New Testament He is the,
Emanuel, (God with us),
The Dayspring from on High,
The King of the Jews,
The King of Glory,
The King of Kings,
He is the Son of Man and Son of God.
He is the Chief Cornerstone,
The Good Shepherd,
The Living Bread,
The Lion of the Tribe of Judah,
He is Alpha and Omega,
The First and the Last,
The Beginning and the End.
He is our High Priest,
Our First Love,
Our Wonderful Counselor.
He is the Mighty God.
He is a Man of Sorrows,
Our Sure Foundation,
And the Shadow of a Mighty Rock in a Weary Land.
He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world,
The Hope of Glory,
The Bishop of Souls,
and yet remember these also are only descriptive titles.
His Name Is Jesus.
He is our Lord Jesus Christ who deserves all our awe and adoration. He is the God of the Old Testament as well as the God of the New Testament. His Name Is Jesus.
